- Gonzalez became a vegan after reading The China Study by T. Colin Campbell in 2007. Prior to that decision, Gonzalez suffered from Bell's Palsy, which caused a period of facial paralysis. Gonzalez's breaking the NFL record for pass receptions was a pretty good indication that he could be a vegan and still excel at football. (The Wall Street Journal, January 25, 2008)
- When asked what his favorite "Giving Back Moment" is, he said: "Holding my Annual 'Shop with a Jock' event. I take 100 underprivileged kids shopping during Christmas. One year, we had a kid put nothing but food in his cart while all the other kids were buying toys and clothes. It struck me that this kid was stocking up so he wouldn't have to be hungry. We bought the food, but I took him back in to buy toys and clothes, too. It was Christmas, and I wanted him to be able to be a kid." (Oprah)
- Tony's mom, Judy, raised him and his older brother, Chris, by working two jobs to support her sons. Tony started playing football because of his older brother, Chris's, urgings. (JockBio.com)

- Gonzalez decided to forfeit his senior year at Berkeley and entered the NFL draft a year early. As premature as he was on the NFL scene, he was considered a top 15 selection, and was rated as the No. 1 tight end in the 1997 Draft.
